With your trick (imagining a force field around our body) - we never learn that we are capable. We are only confirming toxic shame installed programming that we are passive and bad and wrong - and therefore we must have this imaginary boundaries cocoon around us to keep us safe. That will keep social anxiety alive - since we never allow ourselves to alternative and healthier beliefs, other than those which we were hypnotized into.

It's easy to say “You should have seen the signs before you got into a serious relationship. You saw what the person was like”. Here's the truth: most people who end up in abusive relationships come from abusive homes. And what being raised by abusive or neglectful parent does to you is that it normalizes abuse. Basically rendering you blind to red flags. So the signs that make if obvious that person is toxic because you didn't have abusive upbringing.

Because of how the brain is wired, we can have different knowings or beliefs stored in parallel throughout the brain. In other words, one part of us might really believe one truth, and another part know something to be contrary. If we were to use a computer metaphor, we'd say our brain is a parallel processor. Once the schema is stated, what often naturally happens, some other knowing gets forward to contradict the schema.

In this first video in my Coherence Therapy, Explained series, I give an in-depth overview of Coherence Therapy and how it works. This video will not only introduce you to the basic concepts and techniques of this approach, but will bring to life what is uniquely powerful about Coherence Therapy and how it stands out from other models.
Coherence therapy is a cutting-edge approach to deep change that draws on the science of Memory Reconsolidation to update our unconscious beliefs (or schemas). Through changing our deeply imprinted beliefs or schemas, we are able to achieve what is called transformational change. Transformational change is a term to describe the kind of profound change where our symptoms disappear permanently and we are suddenly free to feel and show-up differently, with no further efforts of maintenance required.

While it might seem like a counter-intuitive approach to in no way try to change the symptom, it can be refreshing for clients. Many of us are tired of being managed or trying to manage ourselves. It's nice for once not to be pushed or even pathologized, but rather approached with a deep assumption that whatever pattern we are struggling with, there must be some coherent explanation underneath it.
Just to be approached with that respect is enough.

I'd seen it before. Twelve years ago in college. Somehow my unconscious had served that up. A memory I had never even recorded. Or was it there the whole time and all I needed was the access?
Information from the odd museum show, a half-read article, some PBS documentary... it was all bubbling up in my frontal lobes, mixing itself together into a sparkling cocktail of useful information.

At work in the office I never looked at any one, and I was perfectly well aware that my

I hated my face, for instance: I thought it disgusting...
I hated my fellow clerks one and all, and I despised them all, yet at the same time I was, as it were, afraid of them. In fact, it happened at times that I thought more highly of them than of myself. It somehow happened quite suddenly that I alternated between despising them and thinking them superior to

My schoolfellows met me with spiteful and merciless jibes because I was not like any of them. But I could not endure their taunts; I could not give in to them with the ignoble readiness with which they gave in to one another. I hated them from the first, and shut myself away from every one in timid, wounded and disproportionate pride. Their coarseness revolted me.
Everything that was just, but oppressed they laughed at heartlessly and shamefully.

Wouldn't it be nice to welcome every part of you with love and compassion? Sound like a tall order? With IFS, we have a path to finding compassion and understanding for every part in you, including the ones you dislike the most. Even parts of you who have maybe crossed a line or hurt someone else - every part has a positive intention, it is trying to help in some way. Perhaps that way isn't immediately apparent! It is through listening and witnessing that we build understanding and compassion for ourselves. And then the magic starts - shifts of all kinds might happen - from releasing burdens, to softening the blame inwardly and outwardly, to finding your authentic YES in life.

Our authentic self is often damaged when we experience childhood abuse and neglect. This can lead to symptoms of CPTSD and BPD (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder & Borderline Personality Disorder). This video will cover five common wounded parts that individuals with complex trauma have, including what jobs or roles these parts play in our systems, what the part's greatest fear is (what holds it back from healing), and the antidote the part needs to reduce distress and increase Self leadership (i.e. healing & finding your authentic self!). I will go over hypervigilance, depression, inner critic, substance abuse, and people pleasing. If you would like more videos with IFS (Internal Family Systems) and additional parts being covered in the future, please drop a comment below with any requests you have. Teach the part that is has value no matter how other people treat it. A lot of us grew up in unhealthy families equated our worth and value with how we were being treated by family members or other people. So if we have been abused we equated that to there is something inherently wrong with us. This is something that has to be corrected in trauma therapy. You have value and it doesn't matter how people treated you.

Shame means that man feels that there is something fundamentally wrong with them. Guilt is I did something wrong. Shame is, I am wrong. When shame arises for men, they will often engage in something that Connell talks about as “protest masculinity”. They may externalize their emotions in form of anger and violence, related to sadness or feel threatened and to prove that they are real men. "I am more of man than you".

Toxic Masculinity or Wounded Masculinity?
20 views 1 Dec 2023
Should we be talking about wounded masculinity instead of toxic masculinity? The origins of toxic masculinity are often unhealed wounds, hurt, and trauma. Many men walk around feeling like they don't measure up to society's expectations surrounding masculinity, which are not really realistic or achievable, and if we really thought about it, we wouldn't want men to achieve them. The origins of those oppressive, aggressive, and controlling behaviors that are labelled toxic are often feelings of insecurity and shame, which fuel hypermasculine and compulsive behaviors aimed to resurect their masculine self-esteem. While the oppressive and toxic behaviours that result are certainly problematic, it is likely more appropriate to acknowledge their origins and help to change the underlying gender norms, distress, and mental health conditions that are contributing to the immature performances of masculinites that result. Labeling a man, or a group of men as inherently toxic leaves no path to resolution, while recognizing the wounds that underpin these behaviors acknowlegdes that growth, healing, and embracing a constructive an mature form of masculine performance can serve as a remedy that reduces the incidence of these toxic practices. Embracing a path of healing that includes men's work, therapy, and intentional action can convert toxicity to constructive, loving, and mature

In my humble opinion, this is not published research, actually when we talk about narcissistic personality disorder, we must consider that it overlaps with the spectrum for psychotic disorders. This is full scale psychotic break from reality. The person lives in a fantasy, so when they interact with you, they interact with an internalized version of you within the remit of their fantasy.

I thought once that gods are the opposite of death, but I see now they are more dead than anything, for they are unchanging, and can hold nothing in their hands.
📖 Circe by Madeline Miller (2018)

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power–the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

“SHY” or “QUIET” BPD vs. CLASSICAL BPD

I reject the “diagnosis” of shy borderline. All borderlines are sometimes shy and introverted ("act in") and sometimes act out aggressively.

Someone who is “shy” ALL the time is not a borderline. She is either a covert narcissist or has CPTSD.

REALITY vs. FANTASY

Impaired reality testing is not the same as no reality testing. Fantasy is not a hallucination: fantasy borrows elements from reality and builds around them.

The narcissist, borderline, paranoid, schizotypal cannot tell the difference between reality and fantasy because they share components, have a lot in common.

NPD fantasy is infantile (phantasy). In the absence of a fully constellated and integrated self and ego, the fantasy is limited to self-regulation via cognitive distortion and to the resolution of early childhood conflicts (separation-individuation). All the rest is intact.

BPD fantasy involves external regulation and outsources ego functions.

When fantasy fails in NPD the outcome is shame dysregulation and mortification, when it fails in BPD the outcomes are dysregulation and lability.

Dec 27

Impaired reality testing is partial reality testing. Impaired reality testing is not the same as no reality testing. Fantasy is not the same as a hallucination. In a hallucination typical of psychotic disorders there is no reality testing. In a fantasy, typical for NPD, BPD, there is a reality testing. But it is somehow distorted or impaired. They borrow elements from reality &construct around them a narrative that is counterfactual - defies some facts.

In the absence of a fully constellated and integrated Self and Ego, the narcissist phantasy is limited to self regulation via cognitive distortions known as grandiosity. So the narcissist fantasy is very narrow. It does not constitute the total existence of the narcissist. That's why narcissists can function perfectly in workplace settings where there is no shared fantasy. When they are embedded they behave very differently.

BPD fantasy involves external regulation and outsources ego functions.

In NPD shared fantasy, the partner is unreal (internal object). In BPD shared fantasy the partner is hyperreal. Borderlines perceive themselves and their lives as Unreal (dissociation). This is why borderlines cling, hoover ferociously, won’t let go. They leverage every opportunity and contact to reconstitute the shared fantasy. Example: We all seek closure. But borderlines abuse this quest in order to hook you yet again.

Dec 27

The borderlines fantasy also involves external regulation. But on much more massive scale. Narc external regulation has to do only with self worth. The borderline external validation has in its purview almost every psychological process. Almost all processes are regulated from the outside: moods are labile, emotions overwhelm so needs someone to regulate emotions, needs someone to serve as reality testing, provide with object constancy. Outsourced.

If a person with complex trauma is living out of their survival toolkit and you give them all those new tools, they're going to try to use them – but they're going to go back to the survival tools. And they're not going to have healthy relationships. And so complex trauma prevents healthy adult relationship. Doesn't make them impossible because you can heal all those wounds. Before you can use healthy tools, you have to heal the shame first and the wounds.

This profoundly damaging #scapegoating impacts development of self-worth and identity. You absorb a false narrative of being inherently defective and toxic.
Many #scapegoats end up estranged from their families, unable to bear the cruelty of being continually blamed and ostracized for things outside their control.
You owe no one continued access to inflict harm.

Being the #scapegoat in a #narcissistic family is an agonizing role that can haunt you for life. As the identified problem child, you bear the brunt of criticism, abuse and blame. The pain runs deep, but healing is possible by breaking cycles of shame.

From childhood, the #narcissistic parent singles you out as the "bad one", establishing you as the #scapegoat to unload toxicity. Parental love feels painfully conditional for merely existing.

You suffer heightened abuse, control and manipulations. The #narcissist routinely crucifies you to elevate themselves while denying your humanity. This conditioned trauma leaves lasting scars.

As the family #scapegoat, you feel constantly scrutinized, judged and found wanting, never good enough. Criticism feels relentless. You internalize toxic shame.

Carrying the #scapegoat burden isolates you. Privacy becomes impossible under the harsh spotlight of blame. #Narcissistic parents deliberately estrange you from finding support.

Over time as #scapegoat, you get labeled as the problem relative. Everything gets twisted to highlight your supposedly inherent flaws. You question your own perception.

The #narcissist projects their worst qualities onto you as #scapegoat. You get punished for the very behaviors they exhibit. This crazymaking double standard drives anxiety.

Dec 27

They can't receive when they have these stories that they're at something or someone else and that someone else has more than they do. Narcissists pick people out – this person has money, status. Often times we will nullify our own Selves assuming based on being raised in narc system or adapting paradigm that people only want you as commodity, what they can use me for. 85% people don't get in relationship based on what they can get out of it.

How Narcissists See Relationships VS how Healthy People See Them

Narcissists don't think like everybody else. And if you were raised by one, you probably don't either because you HAD to learn narcissistic programming in order to know your narcissist and survive with them. This can make you a codependent empath or an apathetic narcissist. This video talk about how HEALTHY people approach the relational realm, in hopes of bringing you closer to a healthy center.

I had so much internal shaming dialogue that my Protector didn't let me to my internal Self, it didn't trust me. Unconsciously I was wronging myself. Thought would come to my head and I use that to self-deprecate. I really could use anything. I could beat myself with anything. I beat myself up with that statement. Instead of listening to that mean inner dialogue (you don't have 5 closest friends) and not pushing it away, I give it compassion.

The key is you have to learn to accept yourself while you are in the process of changing. Doesn't do any good go around beating yourself up because of flaws and weaknesses, living guilty and condemned. Because of thinking you are not where you should be in life. Learn to enjoy the glory that you're in while God is changing you and taking you to the next level of glory.
There'll always be something that is not right, some reason to feel wrong about who we are
