Quotes to consider

 Quotes to consider:
Lundy Bancroft:
"Abuse is NOT caused by bad relationship dynamics. You can't manage your partner's abusiveness by changing your behaviour. But he wants you to think you can."

Carl Jung | Psychology and Philosophy 🧠, TWITTER:
The foundation of all mental illness is the unwillingness to experience legitimate suffering.

Sigmund Freud | Philsopher & Neurologist ✍️, TWITTER:
Unexpressed emotions will never die.
They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.

Since most non-HSPs do not seem to enjoy thinking about solutions, they assume we must be unhappy doing all that pondering.
Preferring toughness, the culture sees our trait as something difficult to live with, something to be cured.

Elaine N. Aron

"Any attempt to dictate what thoughts, feelings, and sensations are proper or improper creates a breeding ground for guilt and shame"

Carl Rogers: “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself, just as I am, then I can change.”

Self-regulation, writes Ross Buck, “involves in part the attainment of emotional competence, which is defined as the ability to deal in an appropriate and satisfactory way with one’s own feelings and desires.”

Escape attempt from pain creates more pain.
We get addicted to it.
Dr. Gabor Maté

"I have to be strong"
The core belief in having to be strong enough, characteristic of many people who develop chronic illness, is a defense.
When the Body Says No - The Cost of Hidden Stress
Book by Gabor Maté

Many of us live, if not alone, then in emotionally inadequate relationships that do not recognize or honour our deepest needs.
Isolation and stress affect many who may believe their lives are quite satisfactory.
"When the Body Says No", Dr. Gabor Maté

For anger to be deployed appropriately, the organism has to distinguish between threat and non-threat.
If I don’t know where my own boundaries begin and end, I cannot know when something potentially dangerous is intruding on them.
"When the Body Says No", Dr. Gabor Maté

See that anxiety is normal response on their part to what actually happened to them. And it can be relieved and recovered if they look at its sources.
YT What Causes Your Anxiety? | Dr. Gabor Mate

“What we call the personality is often a jumble of genuine traits and adopted coping styles that do not reflect our true self at all but the loss of it.”
Quote by Gabor Maté

Almost every mental disorder originates in childhood experience and originates as coping mechanism. When you are threatened with something, you would not be anxious, you would be afraid - as you should be.
YT Dr. Gabor Mate

Cry for help begins as coping mechanism and that becomes generalized. So under certain circumstances there should be fear and anxiety. But when I have anxiety and there is no immediate threat, what is that about?
YT Dr. Gabor Mate

Look at childhood. Anxiety is really the cry of some desperate childhood part of themselves for help and to learn to get help with that part. Not just to take tranquilizers, drink or go to Internet to soothe themselves.
YT Dr. Gabor Mate

The desire for self development stems from "narcissistic" desires, a tendency to self-aggrandizement and superiority over others.
Sigmund Freud

Neurosis is the avoidance of legitimate suffering.
JUNG

The first half of life is devoted to forming a healthy ego,
the second half is going inward and letting go of it.
Carl Jung

Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.
Carl Jung

“To be normal is the ideal aim for the unsuccessful.”

Improving our relationships is improving our mental health.
William Glasser

Interpersonal strife with those close to us leads to rifts and resentments that produce symptoms of mental illness; these problems are, in fact, the logical consequence of troubled relationships.
Glasser emphasizes that lasting psychological problems are usually caused by problems in our personal relationships (rather than signifying a biochemical abnormality in the brain), and distress can be remedied through repairing these relationships without recourse to psych drugs.
WILLIAM GLASSER

They see us as timid, shy, weak, or unsociable. Fearing these labels, we try to be like others. But that leads to our becoming overaroused and distressed. Then that gets us labeled neurotic or crazy, first by others then by ourselves.
The Highly Sensitive Person, Elaine N. Aron

Learning to see our trait as a neutral thing-useful in some situations, not in others-but our culture definitely does not see it, or any trait, as neutral.
Be careful about accepting labels for yourself such as "inhibited", "introverted", "shy"
The Highly Sensitive Person,E. Aron

"Sooner or later everyone encounters stressful life experiences, but HSPs react more to such stimulation. If you see this reaction as part of some basic flaw, you intensify the stress already present in any life crisis.
This deeper processing of subtle details causes you to consider the past or future more. You "just know" how things got to be the way they are or how they are going to turn out. It can be wrong, but your intuition is right often enough that HSPs tend to be visionaries, more conscientious, cautious and wise people.
It is important not to confuse arousal with fear.
And often we think that our arousal is due to fear. We do not realize that our heart may be pounding from the sheer effort of processing extra stimulation.
I really suggest trying to view it as neutral.
HSPs must spend far more time trying to invent solutions to human problems just because they are more sensitive to hunger, cold, insecurity, exhaustion, and illness.
Since most non-HSPs do not seem to enjoy thinking about such things, they assume we must be unhappy doing all that pondering.
Spend enough time putting yourself out there in the world - your sensitivity is not something to be feared.
Carl Jung believed that when highly sensitive patients has experienced a trauma, they had been unusually affected and so developed a neurosis.
Preferring toughness, the culture sees our trait as something difficult to live with, something to be cured. HSPs differ mainly in their sensitive processing of subtle stimuli. This is your most basic quality."
The Highly Sensitive Person, Elaine N. Aron

I would berate myself, I'm just selfish, I'm not good enough, I'm not trying hard enough, it's me. This person's perfect, everyone loves him. I fell into narrative that was created in me when I was a child. Brain wired to think – wrong with me.
Lisa Romano

When you're dealing with covert narcissist, they exploit this in you. They figure out what your fears are and they exploit it. I heard “You never were happy so that is why you can ever be happy with me”. And it makes sense based on programming.

I don't mind living in a man's world as long as I can be a woman in it.
Marilyn Monroe

Here we're going to discuss the legendary quote by the legendary woman Marilyn Monroe who uttered "I Don't Mind Living In A Man's World Just As Long As I Can Be A Woman In It." Though the quote was most certainly a product of the times, which we'll get to, the quote nonetheless has resonated throughout generations of young women in America and elsewhere.
Living In A Man’s World
Marilyn Monroe’s primary years in the national spotlight occurred in between the periods known as First-wave feminism and second-wave feminism. The former, first-wave feminism as it is known today, secured the fundamental rights of women to vote and receive an education. However, after seeing women were still beholden to, and depressed by, only having lives that end in child-rearing, Betty Friedan wrote the 1968 book The Feminist Mystique which ignited the second wave of female activism.

At present, the consequences and functions of experiences of shame are not yet well understood. Whereas psychology literature typically portrays shame as being bad for social relations, motivating social avoidance and withdrawal, there are recent indications that shame can be reinterpreted as having clear social tendencies in the form of motivating approach and social affiliation. Yet, until now, no research has ever put these alternative interpretations of shame-motivated behaviours directly to the test.

But the harder you try to ignore the guilt, the worse it gets, right? That is because guilt isn't what you think it is, which means the solution to stop feeling it is also a little different than you may expect. Then, after the war is over - due to any reason - we will copy paste our learned behaviour into all contact - good or bad. Known for: Nonviolent communication
Marshall Bertram Rosenberg (October 6, 1934 – February 7, 2015) was an American psychologist, mediator, author and teacher. Starting in the early 1960s, he developed nonviolent communication, a process for supporting partnership and resolving conflict within people, in relationships, and in society. He worked worldwide as a peacemaker and in 1984,[1] founded the Center for Nonviolent Communication, an international nonprofit organization[2] for which he served as Director of Educational Services.

Peace requires something far more difficult than revenge or merely turning the other cheek; it requires empathizing with the fears and unmet needs that provide the impetus for people to attack each other.
Marshall Bertram Rosenberg

About 1982 Rosenberg spent his last $55 for admission to Midwest Radical Therapy Conference, which was the "best investment I ever made because I met people and made connections that I still have". The importance of strokes of appreciation or affirmation, between communicants, had been emphasized for instance by adherents to transactional analysis. "My workshops before this time used a language of conflict resolution and talked about getting power with people and stuff like that. They focused entirely on helping people deal with behaviors that were painful to them and finding ways of changing them. There was nothing about celebrating with people or affirming each other, or the words 'nurturance' or 'compassion'." Rosenberg says the program led to the femininization of the program (beyond conflict).

Rosenberg was called to many states, countries, and conflicts to provide his expertise in nonviolent communication. In 2004 he was visiting about 35 countries per year on his mission as a t

Count Pyotr "Pierre" Kirillovich Bezukhov is the fictional protagonist of Leo Tolstoy's 1869 novel War and Peace.
Tolstoy based Pierre, more than any other War and Peace character, on himself.
Pierre is a perpetual seeker and is constantly trying to make himself a better man.

Seen on Jan. 17, 2017, with partial-view seats on the right-hand side of the theater.

I admit that I had some trepidation when I saw Josh Groban announced as Pierre - as far as I knew, he was a singer more than an actor, and I felt that the final set of songs required someone with acting chops that I wasn't sure Groban had.

While positive word-of-mouth and reviews surrounded his performance, I was still worried, even as articles about his effort, talent, and commitment appeared. It was a fluke that I saw his show, having gotten day-of partial view seats on a whim, and to this day, I am glad I did, because his performance shattered every expectation.

Groban was perfect in the role, and likely one of the main reasons that the show made it to Broadway in the first place.

The Phantom's distinctive bed was reused as Gloria Swanson's in Sunset Blvd. (1950).
IMDb trivia The Phantom of the Opera (1925)

The first appearance of the bed was in the 1922 film Trifling Women. A promotional photo from the movie appeared on page 59 of the July 1922 edition of Photoplay, in which Barbara La Marr, who stars in the film, was shown reclining on the bed. The bed was used again in the 1925 film The Phantom of the Opera, and in 1934 it was seen in the film Twentieth Century. In 1950 it made what is likely its most famous appearance in Sunset Boulevard as the bed of Norma Desmond. The last known film appearance seems to be 1964, where it turned up in a dream sequence in the movie Good Neighbor Sam.

After appearing in films, the bed appears to have been purchased by Jim Buckley, founder of Cambria’s Pewter Plough Playhouse. Upon his death two years ago, The Cambrian reported:

During his career, Buckley purchased a large selection of movie memorabilia, some of which wound up in Cambria when he moved there with his wife in the mid-1970s.

It was there that he opened the Pewter Plough, an antique store in Cambria’s West Village, and displayed some of his cinema keepsakes.

His inspiration to build a separate museum to house those treasures, however, was sidetracked when he came up with a better idea: using the space as a theater.

Where the bed has gone on in the last two years since Buckley’s death is not known. If you have any information about this marvelous prop that is nearly 100 years old, please do let us know!

Guys and Dolls (1955)

Guys and Dolls Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1955
Hollywood’s stereotyping of national cultures regularly gives offense, but who can resist the glimpse of Havana, Cuba, in a central scene of Guysand Dolls? Suave gambler Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) has talked prim, Salvation Army member Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons) into taking a plane
and dining with him. As she gets drunk and succumbs to her reckless
impulses, she is enflamed by the primal, Latin American drama unfolding around her: her instant rival, an exotic dancer, trying to seduce Sky. Soon the whole room is swept up in a hilarious dance of drunken passions.
The scene offers a magnificent example of Michael Kidd’s revolutionary
choreography for film. Normal, everyday gestures, such as walking or
pointing, are by degrees stylized, made angular and rhythmic, until the
point of full-blown dance. The actions of individuals are woven into
group patterns. And, above all, the staging incorporates movements that are deliberately ungainly, awkwar Guys and Dolls is really two films in one, divided up for its dual male
stars—and indeed, there is an over-the-table dialogue between Brando
and Frank Sinatra that anticipates the Al Pacino–Robert De Niro encounter forty years later in Heat (1995). The Nathan Detroit (Sinatra) half is more indebted to writer-director Joseph Mankiewicz’s source, Damon Runyan’s tales of lovable, streetwise crooks (every “ethnic” tic of New York speech and behavior lovingly exaggerated). Nathan has a long-suffering dame, Adelaide (Vivian Blaine), which leads to amusing material about their fraught path to the altar, such as “Adelaide’s Lament” in Frank Loesser’s colorful score.
Although the more conventionally polished, show-stopping group
numbers like “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” are the ones Broadway devotees remember best, it is in the more romantic, Sky–Sarah half that the film really soars. The songs “If I Were a Bell” and“I’ll Know When My Love Comes Along” are glorious

In a guilt culture you know you are good or bad by what your conscience feels. In a shame culture you know you are good or bad by what your community says about you, by whether it honors or excludes you.

The Shame Culture - NYT
https://nytimes.com/2016/03/15/opinion/the-shame-culture.html

The desire to be embraced and praised by the community is intense. People dread being exiled and condemned. Moral life is not built on the continuum of right and wrong; it’s built on the continuum of inclusion and exclusion.
This creates a set of common behavior patterns. First, members of a group lavish one another with praise so that they themselves might be accepted and praised in turn.

Second, there are nonetheless enforcers within the group who build their personal power and reputation by policing the group and condemning those who break the group code. Social media can be vicious to those who don’t fit in. Twitter can erupt in instant ridicule for anyone who stumbles.

Third, people are extremely anxious that their group might be condemned or denigrated. They demand instant respect and recognition for their group. They feel some moral wrong has been perpetrated when their group has been disrespected, and react with the most violent intensity.
